Benefits

All information below can be also found at the registrar’s website: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/som/offices/pda/policies/index.html
SALARY

All Fellows paid through the University Payroll System should be paid at a level at least equal to the National Institutes of Health Individual Fellowship levels adjusted for years of postdoctoral experience. Stipend levels will be consistent with University guidelines for years of relevant experience using the NIH stipend levels as a minimum and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine stipends as a maximum.

The NIH rate changes from time to time and JHPDA will update you when this happens. Read the current guidelines here.

VACATION

The vacation policy is 2 weeks to one month as determined by the training program director for the postgraduate year. The vacation time for the year is set and announced at the beginning of the academic year and must be used within the academic year (July 1 – June 30). Unused vacation time for fellows does not carry-over beyond the end of the academic year and will not be paid out as a supplement if it is not taken

Public holidays throughout the year: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day.

SICK/MATERNITY LEAVE

Postdocs are given 8 weeks Maternity leave in any rolling 12 month period with full salary and benefits for the duration of leave. This can be extended for up to 12 weeks under Family and Medical Leave; however, those additional 4 weeks are not necessarily paid. Maternity plus Sick leave cannot exceed 12 weeks in any year.

If more leave is necessary, postdocs have disability insurance. On a personal level, you should talk with your PI and work something out; some advisors are more flexible than others, especially when it comes to working from home vs. being physically in the lab.

For adoption leave, new parents are given 1 week following the adoption of the child, and the primary caregiver an addition 5 weeks of paid adoption leave (for a total of 6 weeks).

Hopkins Work-Life Program has a few resources for childcare, found here: http://hopkinsworklife.org/services/childcare.html

PARKING and TRANSPORTATION

If you have a JHMI ID badge, then you can park for FREE in any of the parking garages on campus between 4:00 pm and 8:30 am the next day. First, you’ll need to call the JHMI Parking Office to register your badge in the system, and then you can park on campus for those overnight experiments.

Postdoctoral Fellows can park in on-campus lots for the regular rate of $120/month.

Special Note: For $20, postdoctoral fellows may purchase a discounted MTA monthly pass, which provides unlimited travel on the Baltimore light rail, metro, and buses. At the start of each month, you can pick up your pass in the business office (Miller Research Building (MRB), Rm 131).
GYM MEMBERSHIP
You can avail of the Cooley Center and School of Public Health facility (on-campus) for a reduced monthly membership fee of $29/month. Spouses and dependent children (aged 14-21) are eligible for membership at the same rate as the postdoc.
Homewood gym (Ralph O’Connor Recreation Center) for $15/month
Y of Central Maryland offers no contract, no joining fee and $44/month for access to all metro Y facilities. Discounts also may apply to family memberships.
RETIREMENT PLAN 403(b)
The Johns Hopkins University has a voluntary retirement plan for postdoctoral fellows. This plan allows you to voluntarily tax shelter a portion of your taxable income received as compensation (i.e. salary/wages). That portion of income received from a grant in the form of fellowships (stipends) is excluded from 403(b) eligibility. Any contribution you make is unmatched by the University. The minimum voluntary contribution is $7.50 per pay and may not exceed $18,000 of your taxable compensation. Detailed information and the portal to the enrollment site is available online here. For more information, contact the Benefits Service Center at 410-516-2000 or email retirementchoice@jhu.edu.
Business Cards
Through the Homewood PDA, members can obtain 200 business cards for $25 + tax. Cards will be delivered to and distributed by the HW-PDA. They have ongoing deadlines, so see the Business Card Website for more details.
