NPAW Wrap Up

Postdoctoral fellows work hard and every year, both the National Postdoctoral Association and the JHPDA like to take the time to celebrate the great work postdocs do during National Postdoc Appreciation Week. This year during the week of Sept 17th, postdocs had the chance to get some great discounts around campus and participate in some fabulous events hosted by the JHPDA, including useful workshops and seminars, a chance to catch up with other postdocs over coffee and donuts, and the ever-popular POSTDOCtoberfest.

Miss an event? Check out below for summaries, pictures, and helpful links. We hope everyone had a chance to get out of the lab and have some fun during NPAW and we hope to see you next year!

NIH Loan Repayment Plan Workshop

The NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP) is a program initiated by Congress to help researchers offset the cost of their education by repaying up to $35,000 annually of qualified educational debt and encourage them to stay working in research rather than moving into more lucrative career areas. LRP awards do not fund research projects and are primarily based on an applicant’s potential to build a successful research career.

DPAC hosted the JHU NIH LRP Ambassadors, Dionna Williams, PhD, and Jelani Zarif, PhD, who are current holders of the LRP award and have several years experience with the program and preparing successful applications. The workshop consisted of an overview of the program and a dynamic question and answer session with attendees giving them the “insider knowledge” into the inner workings of the program. -Words by Jada C. Donut Miss It: Breakfast event hosted by the School of Public Health Committee

The School of Public Health committee hosted a successful breakfast event to celebrate National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week (NPAW) on Wednesday, September 19. Fifty-two postdocs from Public Health and Medicine feasted on bananas, inventive donuts from Diablo Doughnuts and enjoyed some hot coffee from CUPS coffeehouse. It was great to meet so many postdocs and let them know about the Johns Hopkins Postdoctoral Association (JHPDA) – how we can support them and how they can get involved. – Words by Katherine Moon

Coffee Break

The Communications Committee and Policy and Advocacy Committee put together a Thursday morning coffee break for postdocs to grab a quick breakfast and coffee before starting their day. Attendees had the chance to win some fun prizes playing a ring toss game and received a complimentary JHPDA mug.

POSTDOCtoberfest

To recognize the significant contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to U.S. research and discovery, institutions from across the country and other parts of the world participate in NPAW by holding special events this week. Our major event for NPAW is POSTDOCtoberfest where most of the postdocs get-together to share their stories over food and beer.
We had a turnout of more than 225 postdocs. We had German sausages, including veggie sausages, coleslaw, salads, pretzels, and drinks. We also had a keg of Octoberfest beer and a keg of Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier. Six postdocs who won the raffle prizes received T-shirts from the Bookstore on campus and gift cards to Atwater’s.
Huge shoutout to Biolegend for sponsoring us and to all the vendors who agreed to provide discounts for the postdocs for the week of NPAW & the week before.
Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped us make this possible!

Happy Hour with University of Maryland

To finish off National Postdoctoral Week, we paired up with the postdoctoral association of UMaryland to offer a common social event to our postdocs. We all gathered in Poets, a nice cocktail bar in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. The extended postdoc community of Baltimore got to mingle over delicious drinks and nibbles.

In light of the success of this event, we will definitely reach out to our friends at UMaryland for more joint events in the future. We can all agree that connecting with people outside of our usual circle is beneficial for all parties involved! -Words by Svetlana Pinet
