PDCO Welcomes Assistant Professor Carissa Cooney, M.P.H to lead an Exciting New Series: ACADEMIC RESEARCH SUPPORT


Ms. Carisa Cooney is an Assistant Professor, Clinical Research Manager, and Director of Education Innovation in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She manages multidisciplinary teams on multiple clinical research studies such as the Johns Hopkins Upper Extremity, Craniomaxillofacial, and Penile Allotransplantation Programs. Ms. Cooney joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2012, has 20 years of clinical research experience, and was the PI on two state-funded grants through the Maryland Innovation Initiative. She co-directs the Plastic Surgery Clinical Research Core through which she has mentored over 30 pre- and post-doctoral fellows and is actively involved with resident fellow education and educational research. She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Carisa’s workshops have been highly touted by her programs residents and PDCO is excited to share her insights with our Postdocs and Graduate Students.

  • March | Crafting Specific Aims for Research Grants



Good grant proposals start with a compelling Specific Aims page. This presentation will address formats from different funding sources and guidelines for writing strong specific aims.



  • April | Grant and Contract Budgets 101



If the idea of drafting research project budgets gives you palpitations, this interactive presentation can help. Critical research budgeting components will be explained and attendees will be provided with an Excel budget template to use to create a practice budget with the help of the speaker during the session.



  • May | How to Be a Good Mentee



Has your relationship with your mentor been somewhat lackluster? Do you have a potential mentor in mind but don’t know how to approach them? Why would you want to be mentored anyway? Good mentoring can open doors for your career, and successful mentoring can be driven in part by the mentee. This presentation addresses tips for making the most of your mentoring relationships.
