JH Covid-19 part-time lab tech job:

Dear Grad students and Post-docs,

As the school year restarts and the threat of Covid-19 infection builds, the Pathology Department is preparing a special clinical laboratory devoted to testing for the SARS CoV-2 virus.

This will be a high-throughput lab testing up to 4,000 samples per day and reporting results back to patients. The people being tested will be a mix of symptomatic patients from the Hopkins Health System and asymptomatic students, faculty and staff as part of a screening program. The tests will involve swabs of the nose and nasopharynx, and perhaps saliva and will be evaluated using standard RT-PCR assays that are approved by the FDA. The lab will probably begin operation in December, and will likely continue through the spring. The location of the lab is being arranged, but could be on the East Baltimore (Broadway) medical campus. You may have heard of similar programs at the Broad and UC Berkeley.

While the details of the program are under development, it is clear that the lab will need a substantial number of employees, perhaps as many as 25+ FTEs. We are reaching out to you, our trainee, to gauge your interest in participating as a part-time technician in this lab. This only involves lab testing—no swabbing! We would provide training and certification prior to employment.

A concern you might have is acquiring infection in the lab; training will minimize the risk. We believe people would be able to work up to 10-19 hours/week, and envision one or two shifts of 8-10 hours. Hourly pay will be based on position and commensurate with experience.

This job would need to be approved by the student or post-doc’s supervisor.
